Meet Pinehaven Farm!

Virtual Farmers Market StaffAugust 26, 2021

Meet John, the owner of Pinehaven Farm. John is a third generation farmer, who grows a wide assortment of vegetables, and specializes in potatoes: growing over 60 unique varieties!!  John chose to pursue farming because growing a strong crop provides him with much inspiration.

John believes that primary producers should be able to make a living growing food. He supports sustainable farming and living, and likes small scale farms that produce food locally. He uses minimal pesticides, and works hard to ensure that everyone he works with understands his philosophy of sustainability.

Potatoes from Pinehaven Farm are harvested in the fall, at the point of optimal, farm fresh flavour, and are properly stored throughout the year to preserve that taste. Did you know that it is possible to survive on a diet made up solely of potatoes, for a very long time?

The biggest difference between potatoes from Pinehaven Farm and potatoes that you may find at a traditional supermarket is that potatoes from Pinehaven Farm have not been treated with chemicals. Potatoes found in grocery stores have been treated, usually with maleic hydrazide or something similar to inhibit sprout growth. Potatoes from Pinehaven haven't been treated with any such chemicals - and are actually still alive!

When you open your bag of potatoes, you'll be greeted with some dirt. Pinehaven does not wash the potatoes until they're ready to be consumed, because when potatoes are freshly harvested their skin is thinner, and washing before storage can lead to moisture being trapped in the potato. By keeping the dirt on the potato, it helps keep that optimal farm fresh flavour until you're ready to enjoy.

John is most proud of the many, many unique varieties of potatoes that he grows on his farm in Millbrook. We have just a few of Pinehaven Farm's potato varieties on the Market this week, including New PotatoesGoldrush Russets, and Red Thumb Fingerling.
